  Abstract Since the release of the digital archives of Defense Meteorological Satellite Program Operational Line Scanner (DMSP/OLS) nighttime light data in 1992, a variety of datasets based on this database have been produced and applied to monitor and analyze human activities and natural phenomena. However, differences among these datasets and how they have been applied may potentially confuse researchers working with these data. In this paper, we review the ways in which data from DMSP/OLS nighttime light images have been applied over the past two decades, focusing on differences in data processing, research trends, and the methods used among the different application areas. Five main datasets extracted from this database have led to many studies in various research areas over the last 20 years, and each dataset has its own strengths and limitations. The number of publications based on this database and the diversity of authors and institutions involved have shown promising growth. In addition, researchers have accumulated vast experience retrieving data on the spatial and temporal dynamics of settlement, demographics, and socioeconomic parameters, which are “hotspot” applications in this field. Researchers continue to develop novel ways to extract more information from the DMSP/OLS database and apply the data to interdisciplinary research topics. We believe that DMSP/OLS nighttime light data will play an important role in monitoring and analyzing human activities and natural phenomena from space in the future, particularly over the long term. A transparent platform that encourages data sharing, communication, and discussion of extraction methods and synthesis activities will benefit researchers as well as public and political stakeholders.

  Title Automatic intercalibration of night-time light imagery using robust regression Type Journal Article

  Abstract In remote-sensing community, radiometric calibration of night-time light images has long been a problem, hindering change detection of images in different dates. Currently, an intercalibration model is regarded as the unique solution for the problem, but prior knowledge is needed to extract reference pixels with stable lights, which are hard to obtain in most of the applications. This study proposed an automatic algorithm to extract the reference pixels for convenient use of the intercalibration model, with an assumption that there are sufficient pixels with stable night-time lights in the multi-temporal images. To automatically extract the stable pixels from images in two dates, all pixels in the two dates were entered into a linear regression model, and the outliers viewed as suspected changed pixels were discarded iteratively. Consequently, some stable pixels were extracted and the intercalibration model was implemented. Annual night-time light composites in Beijing, China, from 1992 to 2010 were taken as the study material, and the results show that the multi-temporal calibrated night-time light data have higher correlation with gross domestic production (GDP) (R 2 = 0.8734) and urban population (UP) (R 2 = 0.9269) than those of the uncalibrated images (with the R 2 values 0.7963 and 0.8575, respectively). Furthermore, the data inconsistency from different night-time light satellites in the same year was reduced with the proposed algorithm. The results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm is effective in intercalibrating the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program's Operational Linescan System (DMSP-OLS) images automatically.

  Title Light-exposure at night impairs mouse ovary development via cell apoptosis and DNA damage Type Journal Article

  Abstract The alternation of light and dark rhythm causes a series of physiological, biochemical and metabolic changes in animals, which also alters the growth and development of animals, and feeding, migration, reproduction and other behavioral activities. In recent years, many studies have reported the effects of long-term (more than 6 weeks) illumination on ovarian growth and development. In this study, we observed the damage, repair and apoptosis of ovarian DNA in a short period of illumination. The results showed that, in short time (less than 2 weeks) illumination conditions, the 24 hrs-light treatment caused the reduction of total ovarian follicle number and downregulation of circadian clock related genes. Furthermore, the changed levels of serum sex hormones were also detected after 24 hrs-light exposure, of which the concentrations of LH (luteinizing hormone), FSH (follicle-stimulating hormone) and E2 (estradiol) were increased, but the concentration of PROG (progesterone) was decreased. Moreover, 24 hrs-light exposure increased the expression of DNA damage and repair related genes, the number of TUNEL and RAD51 positive cells. These results indicated that 24 hrs-light exposure for 4 days, 8days and 12 days increased DNA damage and cell apoptosis, thereby affecting the development of ovary.
