  Abstract Transport demand is one of the essential datasets for urban / transport planning and policy development. However, the full size of travel demand survey requires large amount of cost, therefore the survey is merely conducted in developing countries. Their policy decision might be based on the old and limited datasets. In this study we propose a new approach to estimate transport demand using the night-time light satellite image based on the correlation of these two factors. Taking the case of Chiang Mai Metropolitan area, we found a soft relationship between the night-time light intensity and trip generation/trip attraction. Transport survey data is provided by Chiang Mai University for the year 2016. NOAA provides cloud free monthly composite of night-time light satellite image (VIIRS-DNB) by Suomi-NPP satellite of which resolution is 15 arc-second (about 500m by 500m at equator). It is spatially more precise than zones of travel demand survey and monthly frequency. Applying the relationship between transport demand and night-time light intensity, we propose a method to update the transport demand with higher spatial resolution.

  Abstract Artificial light at night (ALAN) has become a pervasive anthropogenic stressor for both humans and wildlife. Although many negative impacts of ALAN on human health have been identified, the consequences for infectious disease dynamics are largely unexplored. With the increase in popularity of energy efficient light-emitting diodes (LEDs), the effects of spectral composition of ALAN have also come into question. Previous studies showed that exposure to low levels of incandescent ALAN extended the infectious period of House Sparrows (Passer domesticus) infected with West Nile virus (WNV) without affecting mortality rates, thus increasing the pathogen initial reproductive rate (R0) by ~41%. Here, we asked whether exposure to broad-spectrum (3000 K [Kelvin; unit of color temperature]) ALAN suppressed melatonin, a hormone implicated in ALAN-induced physiological consequences, in House Sparrows. We then asked whether amber-hue bulbs (1800 K) could ameliorate the effects of WNV on individual sparrows, and whether broad-spectrum or blue-rich bulbs (3000 K and 5000 K, respectively) could exacerbate them. We found that exposure to low intensity (~5 lux) broad-spectrum (3000 K) ALAN significantly suppressed melatonin levels throughout the night. Second, we found that exposure to broad-spectrum and blue-rich (3000 + 5000 K) lights did not affect WNV viremia but did increase WNV-induced mortality. Conversely, birds exposed to amber-hue (1800 K) ALAN had lower viremia and mortality rates similar to controls (i.e. natural light conditions). This study demonstrates that ALAN affects melatonin regulation in birds, but this effect, as well as ALAN influences on infectious disease responses, can be ameliorated by particular lighting technologies.

  Abstract Artificial light at night is apparently showing to be a major contributor to the increase of sky brightness at night. The natural darkness in large regions of the world including Malaysia currently is at risk. Hence, some Night Sky Brightness (NSB) measurements in Malaysia were conducted by using several types of light sensors in order to serve quantitative data and spread awareness on this issue. This paper aims to analyze the sensor technology that have been used in night sky brightness measurement in Malaysia as well as to identify recent or significant advances and discoveries in this field of study. In this paper, the author adopted qualitative method through literature review from numerous conducted studies by other researchers in order to perceive better understanding on the use of dedicated light sensor in NSB related research. Starting from 2005 until now, it is noticeable that most of the light sensor used in the NSB studies in Malaysia was Sky Quality Meter (SQM) photometer, equipped with TSL237 sensor which has high irradiance responsivity 2.3kHz/(µW/cm2) @ λp = 524nm and 5 Milion:1 input dynamic range as well as able to sense down to 0.00002 Lux and has typical dark frequency down to 0.1 Hz. The result indicates the relative frequency of the SQM usage in NSB studies was 76% compared to PBM, APC, PMT and CDD of only 4% respectively. SQM has always been the choice of researchers in Malaysia to carry out their sky brightness measurements due to user-friendly implementation besides its reliable data obtained from TSL237 sensor which capable to convert the light directly to frequency without an amplifier or data converter. Thus, the nonlinearities and voltage offsets in the data can be circumvented. A fairly good development of sensor that have been utilized in NSB studies can be discerned patently besides NSB studies will always look forward for a better sensor to further enhance the efforts to map sky brightness for preserving the potential dark sky areas for the sake of astronomy.

  Abstract Resumen

El artículo analiza los procesos urbanos de los asentamientos del Ecuador por medio del uso de imágenes satelitales nocturnas, considerando la magnitud y la intensidad de la luminosidad, así como su evolución durante las últimas décadas. En una primera parte, se explica la metodología aplicada para determinar el umbral de luminosidad urbana usando las imágenes satelitales de la serie dmsp-ols. Luego se analiza la intensidad de la luminosidad, así como la magnitud de las áreas con luminosidad urbana, y sus variaciones temporales. Los resultados obtenidos concuerdan con la hipótesis de que el proceso expansivo de baja densidad presente en las ciudades del Ecuador genera una rápida extensión de los usos urbanos, que pueden resultar ineficientes desde el punto de vista económico y poco sustentables ambientalmente. Por lo que a los aspectos metodológicos se refiere, el artículo muestra las potencialidades que pueden derivarse del uso de las fuentes y los procedimientos ensayados, relativamente innovadores en el contexto latinoamericano.

Summary

The article analyzes the urban processes of the main urban areas of Ecuador through the use of nocturnal satellite images, considering the magnitude and intensity of the luminosity, as well as its evolution during the last decades. In the first part, the methodology to determine the threshold of urban luminosity using the satellite images of the dmsp-ols series is explained. Afterwards, the intensity of the luminosity is analyzed, along with the magnitude of the areas with urban luminosity, as well as their temporal variations. The results agree with the hypothesis that the expansive process of low-density development present in the cities of Ecuador, generates a rapid extension of the urban uses that can be inefficient from the economic point of view and unsustainable from the environmental perspective. Regarding the methodological aspects, the article shows the potential that can be derived from the sources and procedures tested, relatively innovative in the Latin American context.

  Abstract Global expansion of human activities is associated with the introduction of novel stimuli, such as anthropogenic noise, artificial lights and chemical agents. Progress in documenting the ecological effects of sensory pollutants is weakened by sparse knowledge of the mechanisms underlying these effects. This severely limits our capacity to devise mitigation measures. Here, we integrate knowledge of animal sensory ecology, physiology and life history to articulate three perceptual mechanisms—masking, distracting and misleading—that clearly explain how and why anthropogenic sensory pollutants impact organisms. We then link these three mechanisms to ecological consequences and discuss their implications for conservation. We argue that this framework can reveal the presence of ‘sensory danger zones’, hotspots of conservation concern where sensory pollutants overlap in space and time with an organism’s activity, and foster development of strategic interventions to mitigate the impact of sensory pollutants. Future research that applies this framework will provide critical insight to preserve the natural sensory world.
