Title (up) Colors of attraction: Modeling insect flight to light behavior Type Journal Article
Year 2018 Publication Journal of Experimental Zoology. Part A, Ecological and Integrative Physiology Abbreviated Journal J Exp Zool A Ecol Integr Physiol
  Volume 329 Issue 8-9 Pages 434-440
  Keywords Animals; ecology; Lighting
Abstract Light sources attract nocturnal flying insects, but some lamps attract more insects than others. The relation between the properties of a light source and the number of attracted insects is, however, poorly understood. We developed a model to quantify the attractiveness of light sources based on the spectral output. This model is fitted using data from field experiments that compare a large number of different light sources. We validated this model using two additional datasets, one for all insects and one excluding the numerous Diptera. Our model facilitates the development and application of light sources that attract fewer insects without the need for extensive field tests and it can be used to correct for spectral composition when formulating hypotheses on the ecological impact of artificial light. In addition, we present a tool allowing the conversion of the spectral output of light sources to their relative insect attraction based on this model.

Title (up) Coloured light pollution in the urban environment Type Journal Article
Year 2019 Publication Photonics Letters of Poland Abbreviated Journal
  Volume 11 Issue 4 Pages 93-95
  Keywords Lighting
Abstract The article deals with issues related to colored lighting occurring in urban space. On the example of the Colosseum Amphitheatre 3D model, applications of colorful illumination were shown and the rationale for using color in individual cases was discussed. The aim of the article is to draw attention to proper planning and modernization of lighting to limit the negative interference of light in the ecosystem.

Title (up) Comparative analysis of HPS and LED luminaries in terms of effectiveness of greenhouse plant lighting and light emission Type Journal Article
Year 2019 Publication IEEE Xplore Abbreviated Journal
  Volume Issue Pages
Keywords Lighting; Light emitting diodes; LED; Lighting; Sodium; Electromagnetics; Light sources; Color; Production
Abstract The article focuses on the analysis of the parameters of light sources, spectrum characteristics of HPS and LED lighting to achieve the best results in greenhouse cultivation with the least energy consumption, and the escape of light into space. The authors have compared both sodium HPS and LED luminaries in the aspect of colour light efficiency and their influence on the plant vegetation process.

Title (up) Comparative in Situ Study of LEDs and HPS in Road Lighting Type Journal Article
Year 2012 Publication LEUKOS: The Journal of the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America Abbreviated Journal Leukos
  Volume 8 Issue 3 Pages 205-214
Keywords Roadway lighting, visibility, LED, high-pressure sodium; LED lighting; HPS, STV, achromatic target, colored target
Abstract The effect of spectrum on the visibility of roadway lighting targets was investigated. The experiment focused on the relation between average visibility ratings and small target visibility (STV) under installations that employed LED and HPS light sources. Achromatic targets were more visible under LEDs illumination conditions than under HPS illumination conditions. The results also suggest that the visibility of colored objects on the road was better under LEDs illumination conditions in comparison to HPS. The results cannot be generalized to all LED light sources, but are likely indicative of LEDs with similar spectral power distributions (SPDs). Relative visibility under source types with different SPDs, and which provide different luminance distributions, should merit consideration when selecting a light source for roadway lighting.
