Title Review on Applications of DMSP/OLS Night-time Emissions Data Type Journal Article
Year 2011 Publication Remote Sensing Technology and Application Abbreviated Journal
Volume 26 Issue 1 Pages 45-51
Keywords Remote Sensing
Abstract The Defense Meteorological Satellite System(DMSP) Operational Linescan System (OLS) has a unique low\|light imaging capability developed for the detection of clouds lit by mooolight. In addition to moonlit clouds, the OLS sensor also detects nocturnal lights from the earth surface.Hence,DMSP/OLS night\|time emissions data becomes well known as a means of monitoring human activities. In this paper,we reviewed a number of applications that had been developed or proposed based on the DMSP/OLS night\|time emissions data, such as monitoring city lights, light pollution, fires, fishing boats and gas flare, and estimating socioeconomic data. Finally, the advantages and disadvantages of night light data were listed and more applications are expected in the future based on the available light emission data.

Title Effects of Extended Photoperiod on Southern Rocky Mountain Engelmann Spruce and Douglas-fir Type Journal Article
Year 1981 Publication Tree Planters' Notes Abbreviated Journal
Volume 32 Issue 4 Pages
Keywords Plants
Abstract Four sources of Engelmann spruce and two of Douglas-fir were grown under eight different extended photoperiod regimes. Incandescent light 1 minute of every 15 at night at 270 lux was more effective than continuous incandescent at 1200 lux or intermittent fluorescent at 950 lux at preventing bud dormancy and maintaining continuous height growth.

Title Radiance calibration of DMSP-OLS low-light imaging data of human settlements. Type Journal Article
Year 1999 Publication Remote Sensing of Environment Abbreviated Journal
Volume 68 Issue 1 Pages 77-88
Keywords Remote Sensing; DMSP; DMSP-OLS; satellite; night lights; light pollution
Abstract Nocturnal lighting is a primary method for enabling human activity. Outdoor lighting is used extensively worldwide in residential, commercial, industrial, public facilities, and roadways. A radiance calibrated nighttime lights image of the United States has been assembled from Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP) Operational Linescan System (OLS). The satellite observation of the location and intensity of nocturnal lighting provide a unique view of humanities presence and can be used as a spatial indicator for other variables that are more difficult to observe at a global scale. Examples include the modeling of population density and energy related greenhouse gas emissions.

Title Measurement of Light Pollution Type Journal Article
Year 2014 Publication Methods of Measuring Environmental Parameters Abbreviated Journal
Volume Issue Pages 368-370
Keywords Skyglow
Abstract Digital photography is based on the conversion of light by sensitive matrix (array of electronic photodetectors) to capture the image which is then digitized and stored as a computer file for further processing and printing. The spectral sensitivity of the cameras is in good agreement with the spectrum of action of the photosensitive hormone melatonin. Digital photography can be used to quantify light pollution acting on the physiology of living organisms. The chapter discusses the principles of spectrophotometry. A portable spectrophotometer for the measurement of light pollution is proposed by Cinzano. It consists of a cooled CCDcamera and a small spectrographic head which is equipped with a De Amici prism composed of two external crown prisms and an inner Flint prism. Sky quality meter (SQM) is a portable photometer for measuring sky brightness and for light pollution monitoring. This device collects the light from a wide solid angle.
