Abstract Urban development to big cities generally will be accompanied by excessive use of artificial light, such as street lamps, billboards, and building lighting systems. Ineffective and incorrect lighting installation design causes environmental degradation, i.e light pollution. Today, light pollution is one indicator of environmental degradation and energy waste behavior. Study on light pollution has progressed in many fields of science, extending from traditional fields of astronomy to atmospheric physics, environmental science, natural science, and social life. Measurement of sky brightness is also an indicator of the feasibility of an observatory development plan. The location of the observatory is located at coordinates latitude -05° 27' 71'' and longitude 105° 09' 39'' with a height of 1030 above mean sea level. The construction of an observatory requires a study of the sky's brightness conditions as a matter of consideration to obtain the best observation result. Therefore, to support the Lampung Provincial Government, Institut Teknologi Sumatera (ITERA) and Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB) in carrying out the construction of observatories in TAHURA WAR, Gunung Betung, Lampung. We did the sky brightness measurements as far as 15 km from the location point of the observatory. We use SQM to measure the brightness of the sky towards the zenith in every crowded area in the city of Bandar Lampung. Then, from the measurement results, we make a map of light pollution. From the mapping results, there are four locations that are indicated to be contaminated by light pollution, namely Tanjung Senang, Teluk Betung, Kemiling, and Gedong Tataan with respective values of 15.8 mpas, 16.6 mpas, 16.8 mpas, and 17.00 mpas.

Abstract Remotely-sensed night-time lights (NTL) reveal the occurrence of human development while excessive light emissions cause ecological impacts and may create human health hazards. The aim of this research is to find out the factors affecting the quantity of remotely-sensed NTLs in Finland at 2015. We also aim to unveil how much NTLs have changed in Finland from 1993 to 2012 and what is the share of NTLs for different land use types in Finland in 2015. Answers to these questions are achieved with satellite radiance data and data on spatial structure, multiple linear regression (MLR), and change-detection methods. National and regional MLR models were produced to explain NTL and to compare the suitability of this modelling approach in different regions. Radiance is explained by population density, industrial building density, and lit roads density. Surprisingly, the brightest areas in Finland seem to be in Närpiö, a rural area with low population density but where greenhouse farming is common. Based on change-detection, new light sources have emerged because of the expansion of mining and tourism industries.

Abstract World Heritage sites provide a key mechanism for protecting areas of universal importance. However, fifty-four UNESCO sites are currently listed as “In Danger”, with 40% of these located in the Middle East. Since 2010 alone, thirty new sites were identified as under risk globally. We combined big-data and remote sensing to examine whether they can effectively be used to identify danger to World Heritage in near real-time. We found that armed-conflicts substantially threaten both natural- and cultural-heritage listed sites. Other major risks include poor management and development (globally), poaching (Africa mostly) and deforestation (tropics), yet conflict is the most prominent threat. We show that news-mining of big-data on conflicts and remote sensing of nights-lights enabled us to identify conflict afflicted areas in near real-time. These findings provide a crucial avenue for developing a global transparent early-warning system before irreversible damage to world heritage takes place.

Abstract Remotely sensed nighttime light (NTL) from the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP) Operational Linescan System (OLS) provides a spatially consistent and cost-effective mean to estimate energy consumption pattern. While previous researches have documented the application of NTL to predict electric power consumption (EPC) with varying degrees of success, few have systematically studied the possible factors affecting the EPC-NTL relationship. Moreover, no substantial research effort has been made to relate overall energy consumption (OEC) to NTL. This study investigated key factors governing the EPC/OEC-NTL relationship by examining the influences of affluence, urbanization, technology, temperature, and NTL pattern. Results show that EPC increased with higher per capital GDP, urbanization rate, and high-technology exports, and lower agricultural development, both globally and regionally. Meanwhile, EPC generally reduced with higher temperature and more agglomerate human activities. A strong OEC-NTL relationship was found; but the influencing factors to the OEC-NTL relationship varied across regions due to the natures of energy use. These factors must be considered especially for the studies of less-affluent regions where NTL was undetectable by the DMSP-OLS sensor.
