Title Estimating spatiotemporal dynamics of county-level fossil fuel consumption based on integrated nighttime light data Type Journal Article

Abstract Rapid urbanization has resulted in increased fossil fuel consumption in China, which is closely related to regional sustainable development and CO2 emissions. This study proposed an improved model to estimate fossil fuel consumption on the county scale in Shandong to understand the dynamics of fossil fuel consumption. This improved model is beneficial for establishing energy-saving and CO2 emission reduction policies for both Shandong and other regions in China. Because of the lack of data on a county scale, this study applied panel data analysis from 1992 to 2017 by integrating the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program’s Operational Linescan System (DMSP-OLS) and NPP-VIIRS (Suomi National Polar-Orbiting Partnership satellite with the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suit) nighttime light data. Results showed that (1) The new method performed better than previous methods on estimating fossil fuel consumption; (2) Fossil fuel consumption has been rapidly growing in all cities and most districts and counties, mainly concentrated in west and east central Shandong; (3) Regions with high fossil fuel consumption shifted from west central Shandong to east central on the city level, and expanded from the east central to the entire central region on the county level; (4) In regions with a lower level of development, fossil fuel consumption tended to grow faster. These results will improve the understanding of fossil fuel consumption over the long term on county scales, and are beneficial for creating policies on regional energy savings and CO2 emission reduction.

Abstract The maternal circadian time structure is incredibly important in the entrainment and programing of the fetal and newborn circadian time structure. Natural sunlight is the primary environmental time cue for entrainment of circadian rhythms, but high-risk pregnant women spend most of their time indoors with artificial light sources and extremely low levels of natural light both during the day and night. Because the daily level, timing, duration of light exposure and its spectral properties are important in maintaining the normal circadian physiology in humans, we aimed to evaluate the environmental lighting conditions in high-risk pregnant women admitted to hospital for long-term stay. About 30 patients were included in the study. Exposed illuminance, color temperature and effective circadian radiation dose were measured and recorded every 10 s by light dosimeters attached to the patients' clothing. We documented the illuminance of 29 pregnant women on 235 inpatient days. Median (IQR) measured illuminance was 70 (28-173) lux in the morning, 124 (63-241) lux in the afternoon, 19 (6-53) lux in the evening and 0 (0-0) lux at the night. Median illuminance for the 235 inpatient days of assessment was below the recommended EU standard of 100 lux-60.5% of the mornings and 42.7% of the afternoons. The women confined to indoor locations rarely achieved an illuminances more than 300 lux in the morning and in the afternoon. Compared to women with outdoor mobility, those confined indoors have a significantly lower illuminance and color temperature, both in the morning and in the afternoon. Our study presents the first information about the dramatically altered environmental lighting conditions experienced by high-risk pregnant women during their hospital stay. Their exposure to light while in the hospital is significantly lower than exposure to natural daylight levels and below the recommended EU standard.

Abstract The disruption of circadian rhythms by environmental conditions can induce alterations in body homeostasis, from behavior to metabolism. The light:dark cycle is the most reliable environmental agent, which entrains circadian rhythms, although its credibility has decreased because of the extensive use of artificial light at night. Light pollution can compromise performance and health, but underlying mechanisms are not fully understood. The present review assesses the consequences induced by constant light (LL) in comparison with dim light at night (dLAN) on the circadian control of metabolism and behavior in rodents, since such an approach can identify the key mechanisms of chronodisruption. Data suggest that the effects of LL are more pronounced compared to dLAN and are directly related to the light level and duration of exposure. Dim LAN reduces nocturnal melatonin levels, similarly to LL, but the consequences on the rhythms of corticosterone and behavioral traits are not uniform and an improved quantification of the disrupted rhythms is needed. Metabolism is under strong circadian control and its disruption can lead to various pathologies. Moreover, metabolism is not only an output, but some metabolites and peripheral signal molecules can feedback on the circadian clockwork and either stabilize or amplify its desynchronization.

Abstract This work presents the possibility of using the extremely popular compact digital cameras of smartphones or action cameras to perform sky photometry. The newest generation of these devices allows to save raw images. They are not as good as digital single-lens reflex camera, in particular in terms of sensitivity, noise and pixel depth (10 bit versus 12 bit or more), but they have the advantage of being extremely widespread on the population and relatively cheap. These economical digital compact cameras work with an electronic shutter, it overcomes the consumption of mechanics and allows to gather images for long time. The work uses a simple calibration method to transfer raw data from the proprietary RGB color space to the standard CIE 1931 color space. It allows the measurement of sky luminance in cd m−2 with an expected uncertainty of about 20%. Furthermore, the colorimetric calibration allows to know the correlated color temperature of a portion of the sky, it can help the identification of the kind of polluting sources. Aiming at better clarifying the performances of calibrated digital compact cameras, a comparison with a calibrated DSLR camera is presented in outdoor situations showing a good agreement both for luminance and color temperature measurements.

Abstract Cloud detection for night-time panchromatic visible and near-infrared (VNIR) satellite imagery is typically performed based on synchronized observations in the thermal infrared (TIR). To be independent of TIR and to improve existing algorithms, we realize and analyze cloud detection based on VNIR only, here NPP/VIIRS/DNB observations. Using Random Forest for classifying cloud vs. clear and focusing on urban areas, we illustrate the importance of features describing a) the scattering by clouds especially over urban areas with their inhomogeneous light emissions and b) the normalized differences between Earth’s surface and cloud albedo especially in presence of Moon illumination. The analyses substantiate the influences of a) the training site and scene selections and b) the consideration of single scene or multi-temporal scene features on the results for the test sites. As test sites, diverse urban areas and the challenging land covers ocean, desert, and snow are considered. Accuracies of up to 85% are achieved for urban test sites.
