  Abstract Artificial light at night has affected most of the natural nocturnal landscapes worldwide and the subsequent light pollution has diverse effects on flora, fauna and human well-being. To evaluate the environmental impacts of light pollution, it is crucial to understand both the natural and artificial components of light at night under all weather conditions. The night sky brightness for clear skies is relatively well understood and a reference point for a lower limit is defined. However, no such reference point exists for cloudy skies. While some studies have examined the brightening of the night sky by clouds in urban areas, the published data on the (natural) darkening by clouds is very sparse. Knowledge of reference points for the illumination of natural nocturnal environments however, is essential for experimental design and ecological modeling to assess the impacts of light pollution. Here we use differential all-sky photometry with a commercial digital camera to investigate how clouds darken sky brightness at two rural sites. The spatially resolved data enables us to identify and study the nearly unpolluted parts of the sky and to set an upper limit on ground illumination for overcast nights at sites without light pollution.

  Abstract The distribution of Illex argentinus squid extends from 23°S to 54°S. The largest catches of the species, which represents one of the most important fisheries in Argentina, take place between 35°S and 52°S. Argentina's fisheries administration keeps close records of the Argentine fleet position and the Cephalopod laboratory at the Instituto Nacional de Investigación y Desarrollo Pesquero (INIDEP) monitors and suggests actions for the management of the resource. The catches are carried out both within national and adjacent international waters. Fleets from different countries participate in the fisheries operating jigger vessels during the night with strong lights to attract the squid. One of the greatest difficulties in the evaluation of the status of this resource is to know the number of foreign vessels fishing outside the Argentine Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). The Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer (VIIRS) day/night band (DNB) satellite images are a useful tool to monitor and quantify these fleets, building on the capacity of the sensors to detect the light emitted by the lamps placed on the ship decks. In this work, we report the development of a specific new method (set of algorithms) to process the images and identify automatically the jigger ships that compose the overseas fleet. Results were validated using the positioning data of the Argentine jigger fleet and comparing light emissions of these vessels against those identified by the new method. The process of identifying ships has proved to be robust considering the statistical results obtained: mean relative error (MRE) of 0.03% and a root-mean-square error (RMSE) of 1.62 ships.

  Abstract Urban lighting is one of the significant issues that urban designers and architects are facing, and it has received a special attention in recent years. Urban lighting pursues critical goals such as preserving the livability of the city during nighttime, providing a sense of security, maintaining the city‟s readability, etc. Use of incompatible patterns for lighting design wastes significant amount of energy annually. A master lighting plan for urban areas should be recommended to achieve these goals and prevent wasteful energy use in lighting. One of the solutions for designing an appropriate plan is to notice the pedestrian traffic pattern in the city by considering space syntax model and integration maps analysis. In this research, one of Tehran‟s regions has been chosen and its integration map has been generated using appropriate software. Tehran is selected as case study of this research while the results might be applied in other similar cities especially in developing countries. First, based on the integration degree of the passages which reveals pedestrian traffic pattern and considering recommended illuminance standards, the average required lighting has been determined. Second, comparing the measured lighting intensity and the standard amounts reveals the correlation between the presented urban lighting and energy consumption model. Eventually, different solutions for appropriate urban lighting design based on acceptable energy consumption patterns have been suggested.

  Abstract We analyzed the temporal variability of the fishing fleet of Dosidicus gigas, located outside the exclusive economic zone of Peru (EEZ), with a spatial luminosity index. The nighttime satellite images were provided by the Operational Linescan System (DMSP-OLS) from 2004 to 2015. 2995 images were processed, selecting pixels in the range of 30–63 Digital Number (DN), to identify the presence of vessels in the image.

The time series showed an extensive latitudinal distribution of the fishing fleet from 6°S to 32°S, with years of low (2005–2009) and high (2004, 2010–2015) presence, describing a recurrent seasonal pattern of latitudinal displacement measured from its center of gravity (CG). The CG reaches its southernmost position between February to April and its northernmost position between August to October. Some vessels were also detected within the Peruvian EEZ.

The latitudinal inertia presented values of 0.3–1 indicating high fleet concentration between 12°S to 17°S and the longitudinal inertia presented values >2, showing the wide distribution of the resource. Luminous pixels showed high fishing occurrence (>18 times) on a single pixel, in front of Chimbote around 9°51′S–82°31′W from 2004 to 2011. From 2012 to 2015 areas of high fishing occurrence increased in front of Huarmey (10°36′S/82°41′W) and San Juan de Marcona (15°53′S/80°6′W).

For both periods, high intensity pixels (DN >60) show extensive areas of fishing operation between 9°S to 20°S along 200 nautical miles from the coast, while values between 30 and 45 DN could be mostly associated with the search for fishing zones. Since 2012, pixels with DN >58 have increased, indicating a greater fishing activity likely related to a higher availability of the resource or a better knowledge of the fishing zones, associated with an increase of the fishing effort and a possible higher pressure on the resource.
