Abstract (1) background: Urban representations of the Amazon are urgently needed in order tobetter understand the complexity of urban processes in this area of the World. So far, limited workthat represents Amazonian urban regions has been carried out. (2) methods: Our study area is theEcuadorian Amazon. We performed a K-means algorithm using six urban indicators: Urban fractaldimension, number of paved streets, urban radiant intensity (luminosity), and distances to theclosest new deforested areas, to oil pollution sources, and to mining pollution sources. We alsocarried out fieldwork to qualitatively validate our geospatial and statistical analyses. (3) results:We generated six Amazonian urban regions representing different urban configurations and processesof major cities, small cities, and emerging urban zones. The Amazonian urban regions generatedrepresent the urban systems of the Ecuadorian Amazon at a general scale, and correspond to theurban realities at a local scale. (4) conclusions: An Amazonian urban region is understood as a set ofurban zones that are dispersed and share common urban characteristics such a similar distance tooil pollution sources or similar urban radiant intensity. Our regionalization model represents thecomplexity of the Amazonian urban systems, and the applied methodology could be transferred toother Amazonian countries.

Abstract The central circadian pacemaker in mammals, the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN), is important for daily as well as seasonal rhythms. The SCN encodes seasonal changes in day length by adjusting phase distribution among oscillating neurons thereby shaping the output signal used for adaptation of physiology and behavior. It is well-established that brief light exposure at the beginning and end of the day, also referred to as “skeleton” light pulses, are sufficient to evoke the seasonal behavioral phenotype. However, the effect of skeleton light exposure on SCN network reorganization remains unknown. Therefore, we exposed mice to brief morning and evening light pulses that mark the time of dawn and dusk in a short winter- or a long summer day. Single-cell PER2::LUC recordings, electrophysiological recordings of SCN activity, and measurements of GABA response polarity revealed that skeleton light-regimes affected the SCN network to the same degree as full photoperiod. These results indicate the powerful, yet potentially harmful effects of even relatively short light exposures during the evening or night for nocturnal animals.

Title First Direct Observational Evidence for Secondary Gravity Waves Generated by Mountain Waves Over the Andes Type Journal Article

Abstract A mountain wave with a significant brightness temperature amplitude and ~500 km horizontal wavelength was observed over the Andes on 24–25 July 2017 in Atmospheric Infrared Sounder (AIRS)/Aqua satellite data. In the Modern‐Era Retrospective Analysis for Research and Applications, version 2 (MERRA‐2), reanalysis data, the intense eastward wind flowed over the Andes. Visible/Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS)/Suomi‐NPP (National Polar‐orbiting Partnership) did not detect the mountain waves; however, it observed concentric ring‐like waves in the nightglow emissions at ~87 km with ~100 km wavelengths on the same night over and leeward of the Southern Andes. A ray tracing analysis showed that the mountain waves propagated to the east of the Andes, where concentric ring‐like waves appeared above a region of mountain wave breaking. Therefore, the concentric ring‐like waves were likely secondary waves generated by momentum deposition that accompanied mountain wave breaking. These results provide the first direct evidence for secondary gravity waves generated by momentum deposition.

Abstract Communities and protected areas worldwide have initiated programs to protect and promote dark night skies. Yet, limited research has explored how and why night skies become of interest or meaningful to people. Because night skies are literally beyond human reach, we focus on how visitors to a U.S. national park imagine night skies and invoke imaginaries that make night skies meaningful. Drawing from interviews, we examine how visitors use symbolic language, narrative, and other discursive practices to develop the social, cultural, and spatial contexts of their night sky experiences. Findings inform our understanding of imagination and imaginaries in tourism and recreation research, while offering new approaches to night skies research.
